As an Approved Consultant for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), Dr. Swaim offers Individual Consultation toward the 20 hours required for ASCH Clinical Hypnosis Certification. Consultation is available only to individuals fully licensed in their respective profession at the time the Certification Contract is established.
Individualized Consultation is distinct in nature from the type of clinical supervision one pursues toward clinical licensure. The goal of the collaboration is reviewing the selection and use of hypnosis techniques, collaborative integrative conceptualization incorporating the use of clinical hypnosis, and, depending on Consultee interests, exploring new skills for the clinician’s toolbox. Compared to Supervision, there is no clinical responsibility implied on the part of the Consultant.
In terms of preparation, lengthy written case summaries are not typically utilized. The clinical summary can be done verbally in calls or video conference, although if you enjoy a more formal written summary I can review one prior to our Consultation sessions. The Consultation process should feel less like “work” than you may anticipate. This is the opportunity to polish and shine an already well functioning set of clinical skills!
Many factors contribute to your selection of Approved Consultant, and you don’t need to pick just one Consultant. The ASCH model allows for you to designate a consultant for all or part of your Consultation process, to tailor your needs to create the best possible Consultation experience for you and your practice. Previous Consultees working with Dr. Swaim typically are mental health providers with primary interests in Pain Management, applied Medical Psychology (health behavior change, insomnia, etc.) and brief psychotherapy models/interventions for mood disorders. Consultation can also involve a focus on performance enhancement strategies for general wellness as well as performing artists, athletes, students and public speakers.
The Consultation hours are an opportunity for you to develop either more depth with what you are already good at, or branch out a little more from how you have currently been developing your hypnosis skillset. Costs per hour are equivalent to or slightly less than Dr. Swaim’s current psychotherapy hourly rate*.
